There’s something stark about this picture that enables it to escape sentimentality but I can’t work out what. Maybe it’s the spikiness, or the ‘what’s-that-metal-thing?-ness’ . . . ? But whatever . . it’s come out as an arresting photo.

I couldn’t put it not words, it was the contrast that struck me. I love the ironmongery in Victorian greenhouses, something you don’t always see clearly when everything is in full bloom. Stark is a good description.
